The
Coastal Fishing Museum in the Baltic resort of Baabe provides insights
into the means of production used by the fishermen of the Mönchgut. In the exhibition you will find many different pieces of equipment for
small scale fishing in the waters of the bays (Bodden) and of the
Baltic. The boards explain and describe how fish were caught and boats
built, as well as the fishing equipment. Another exhibit in the museum
is the open motorboat “Ossi”, 9.20 m long, which was built in Baabe and
became the property of the Baabe municipality when it was withdrawn from
active fishing.
You will also find fishing boats of the past which are typical of the
Mönchgut and were built in Baabe. Engines are on show beside the
boats. These engines were emergency solutions because no other design was
available for powering the ships. And then there are also fish traps,
nets and a herring sorting machine to be examined. We look forward to
welcoming you.
