Museum of Local History

Strandstrasse 1

Opening hours

The exhibition in the Mönchgut Museum of Local History and Culture deals with life on the Mönchgut from its historically recorded beginnings down to the more recent past. It is accommodated in a thatched house of a farmer-fisher-pilot built about 1850. The main themes are pre- and early historical findings, the geology and geography of the Mönchgut and the development of Göhren from a small village of fishermen and farmers to the third largest Baltic Sea resort on Rügen.

Models of ships, sailors’ souvenirs and captains’ portraits witness to the seafaring activities on the Mönchgut. The exhibits in the rooms faithfully reproduce the details of the living conditions and domestic economy of the fisher-farmers on the Mönchgut.

The famous traditional “Mönchgut Trachten” (costumes) and other richly decorated objects are excellent examples of regional folk art.
