One
of the oldest houses still extant on Rügen is the Clergy
Widows’House built in 1720 in Gross Zicker. The characteristic
features of this Low German “Hallenhaus” (house in hall form) are
the striking pointed thatched roof known as the “Zuckerhut”
(sugarloaf) and the materials used – wood and loam. The Clergy
Widows’ House was a social institution. The pastors’ widows who were
penniless after their husbands’ death were given accommodation here
and all their vital needs were met.
This historical jewel, which has long since been a popular motif for
artists, writers and photographers, is used nowadays as a meeting
place, museum and gallery. Numerous exhibitions, especially of the
visual arts, as well as literary events find a home here.
The picturesque setting is completed by a typical farmer’s garden
with flowers and economic plants which are native to the Mönchgut.
