The exhibits show the history of pilotage in Thiessow which had
already started at the beginning of the 17th century. From the
middle of the 19th century, piloting along the German Baltic
coast
was fundamentally restructured. Thiessow became the
headquarters of
the Royal Commander of Pilots for the district
from Darsser Ort to
Usedom. In addition to nautical pilotage, the
pilots’ tasks included
the lifeboat service and assistance for
customs officers. There are
many navigation instruments used by
the pilots on view, as well as
the original pilots’ bell cast in
Stralsund in 1842. All these items
witness to the responsible and
dangerous profession of pilot and thus make it a very special
exhibition. The Pilots’ Tower on the Lotsenberg (Pilots’ Hill), 36
meters above sea level, is the symbol of Thiessow. There has
always
been a look-out for pilots on this historical site. The tower
was
opened in 2003 and was constructed to a large extent along
the lines
of its predecessors. From the viewing platform 13 meters
up, the
visitor has breath-taking views across the Mönchgut as
far as Usedom.
