The Rookhus (Smokehouse)

Thiessower Str.7

18586 Ostseebad Göhren

Opening hours

The “Rookhus” built around 1720 with the low sweep of its thatched roof – known locally as the sugar loaf – is a real architectural treasure and a great rarity. Indeed, this picturesque little half timbered house is one of the oldest houses and the last remaining smokehouse without a chimney on Rügen. The smoke which rose from the open fireplace found its way out through the hall door and the openings in the roof ridge. The museum offers vivid insights into the simple living and working conditions of small farmers and fishermen who lived in cramped quarters under one roof together with the tools of their trade and their animals. The exhibition is completed by a ornamental garden in the Biedermeier style and a display on the fishing activities of the Mönchgut.
