The history of how the Mönchgut Museums were founded

Ruth Bahls

Museumsgründerin

Ruth Bahls (1909-1994)

That the Mönchgut has such a density of museums today is the result, above all, of the tireless efforts of a Mönchgut teacher. Ruth Bahls (1909-1994), the daughter of a ship’s captain from Göhren, devoted her whole life to rescuing valuable historical objects and building up and extending the Mönchgut Museums. Without her work it would not be possible today to present so expressively the everyday life of times long past to visitors and local residents alike. Even now, “Miss Bahls” is well known to young and old on the Mönchgut.

The eight Mönchgut Museums

Mökegude Halbinsel Mönchgut

- the Museum of Local History and Culture, Museum Farm, Smokehouse and Museum Ship “Luise” in the Baltic maritime resort of Göhren, the School Museum in Middelhagen, the Clergy Widows’ House at Gross Zicker, the Coastal Fishing Musuem in Baabe and the Pilots’ Tower with the Pilots’ Guardhouse at Thiessow – have set themselves the task of enabling both guests and local residents to perceive and experience the Mönchgut as it has developed over the years. All of the museums occupy original buildings classified as historical monuments and, in one case, a museum ship. They have been designed to provide expressive insight into the lives and working world of the Mönchgut population in the course of its history.
